The 2012 George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award Recipient

APA Film and The George C. Lin Foundation are honored to announce Lily Mariye, director of "Model Minority", as the recipient of the 2012 George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award.
Ms. Mariye thoroughly captivates us with her storytelling in this impressive directorial debut. This compelling film is less about defying Asian American stereotypes than it is about the pressures and harsh realities of being a teenager in an environment fraught with neglect. For her clear talent and ability behind the camera lens, as well as her passion and commitment to the independent spirit of filmmaking, we award the 2012 George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award to Ms. Mariye.

About the Award

The George C. Lin Foundation, on behalf of The San Diego Foundation, Asian Pacific American Film of Washington, DC, and The San Diego Asian Film Foundation, established the George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award in 2009 to recognize young and talented filmmakers that have shown an exemplary commitment to filmmaking within the Asian and Asian American film genre.
The George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award is given on an annual basis by the co-sponsoring organizations at their respective film festivals in Washington, DC, and San Diego, CA. Each recipient will receive a cash prize and sculpted bronze award by artist Chin Wen Chuang.
This award commemorates the life of George C. Lin, who died October 14, 2008, at the age of 37. From 2000 to 2003, George served as Founding Executive Director of the Washington, DC-based nonprofit Asian Pacific American Film. To date, the organization has held its 13th annual consecutive film festival in Washington, DC, for Asian Pacific American and Asian diaspora films.
In addition to a remarkable career, George led an extraordinary life helping individuals and organizations as a supporter and mentor for the fledgling artist, musician, filmmaker, or student. The George C. Lin Emerging Filmmaker Award is given to those who capture the spirit and commitment of George C. Lin and his legacy as a festival director, producer, community volunteer, arts advocate, scientist, family member, and friend.
